Redskins Offseason: Mike Shanahan Speaks About Cap Penalty, Offseason Injuries, and Peyton Manning

Shanahan recently spoke to the media for the first time since the Senior Bowl. The topics he touched on ranged from Leonard Hankerson‘s progression, to Robert Griffin III. Redskins Beat Reporter Rich Campbell is on location at the NFL owners meetings in Florida, and is quite active on Twitter.

Some injury updates:

Shanahan: Hankerson should be ready by June 1. #Redskins

Shanahan: Cooley (knee) is having a good offseason. #Redskins

Shanahan: Jammal Brown has regularly been at Redskins Park this offseason. Yoga classes have helped him break up scar tissue in right hip.

That’s pretty damn good news. I’m excited to see Leonard Hankerson back on his feet. He made a good little splash last season before he got injured. Jammal Brown’s hip has been hindering his play over the last couple seasons. Hopefully this “Yoga” that he’s doing is actually helping. Regarding the Brown comment, this puts one thing in my head, that Shanahan is looking to stick with Brown on the line. He’s got a lot of ground to make up before I, personally, will be comfortable with him in a starting position.

Shanahan touched on Peyton Manning while speaking to the press in Florida, yesterday.

Shanahan also touched on the topic of Peyton Manning.

Shanahan: Trading for the No. 2 pick AND signing Peyton Manning “was definitely a possibility.” Confirms they met with Manning.

— Rich Campbell (@Rich_Campbell) March 28, 2012

Shanahan believes the Redskins were legit contenders for Manning because they met with him for so long.

— Rich Campbell (@Rich_Campbell) March 28, 2012

Shanahan confirmed he and Kyle met with Peyton for five hours at Shanahan’s Denver home. They watched film.

— Rich Campbell (@Rich_Campbell) March 28, 2012

Shanahan doesn’t believe the Redskins’ trade for the No. 2 pick affected Manning’s decision not to choose Washington.

— Rich Campbell (@Rich_Campbell) March 28, 2012

That’s pretty interesting to me. Peyton and RGIII are VERY different quarterbacks. To see the offense switching back and forth would have been comical. On the other hand, if the stars aligned and we were to draft Andrew Luck.. Luck would be learning behind the best QB of our generation. Andrew would have basically learned to piss a grade of excellence only rivaled by Peyton Manning himself.

Shanahan also spoke about 2012 NFL Draft prospect Robert Griffin III. Though I couldn’t find a quote, I was able to find this on RealRedskins.com. Bruce Allen (Redskins GM) speaking about the QB position.

I can’t tell you who we’re going to draft three years from now in the first round, but that (quarterback) position is a critical position, we think it’s a good investment for the franchise to get a quarterback.”

Then came the big news stuff, the Cap Penalty and Free Agency

Shanahan would not comment on how salary cap penalty is affecting offseason plans. #Redskins

— Rich Campbell (@Rich_Campbell) March 28, 2012

Shanahan on the cap penalty: “We found out an hour before” the start of free agency. #Redskins

— Rich Campbell (@Rich_Campbell) March 28, 2012

Shanahan on Eddie Royal getting away: “You’ve got to make some tough decisions relative to the cap.”

— Rich Campbell (@Rich_Campbell) March 28, 2012

That last one kind of hit me as inferring the cap penalties are hurting the Redskins’ Offseason Goals. Although he didn’t say that outright, it’s still a very strong possibility.

Shanny also touched on London Fletcher. This, in my mind, was the most important portion of his ramble…

Shanahan is praising London Fletcher’s value. Says negotiations are ongoing. Wouldn’t say how big the dropoff to Plan B is. I’ll say it: big

The Redskins kind of went all ninja for a while and kept their mouths shut. It’s nice to know that business is moving on, despite hurricaine Goodell.
