Redskins vs. Eagles on New Years, 2005 Edition

December 28, 2011

History

The last battle between the Redskins and Eagles on New Years ended with a Redskins victory on the road, 31-20.

January 1st, 2006:

A 4:15 p.m. kickoff would end the 2005-2006 regular season for the Philadelphia Eagles. Because of this game, the Redskins (10-6) were able to clinch the final playoff spot. The win also knocked the Dallas Cowboys out of contention. Who doesn’t like that?

At 5-3, Washington lost 3 straight games against the Bucs, Raiders, and Chargers. Those three losses propelled the Washington Redskins into beast mode, winning 5 straight after, ending with the win in Philadelphia.

Clinton Portis, named MVP of the game, rushed for 112 yards on 19 carries. But that, to me, wasn’t what won the game for the Redskins.

A stout defense, led by second-year safety Sean Taylor (8 Tackles, 1 Assist, 1 FR/TD) managed to force 6 turnovers against Philly. The final fumble being returned by none other than No. 21 himself for a game-sealing 39 yard touchdown with ~2:00 left on the clock.

The Redskins would go on to face the Buccaneers in the wild-card. Washington would win 17-10, only to lose to the Seahawks 20-10 the following week.

The Redskins have only seen the post-season once since, in 2007, losing again to the Seahawks 35-14
