2nd Half Feelings

December 4, 2011

Game Recaps

The second half for the Redskins began just as the first ended, ineffective passing coupled with mediocre blocking. Roy Helu will record his first fumble, placing the Jets in scoring territory. Luckily, Jets kicker Nick Folk wasn’t able to hit the short field goal. The Redskins defense looked very stout in the 3rd quarter holding the Jets to only 4 of 13 3rd down conversions on the day. The Redskins are 2nd in the NFL in turnovers, behind Philadelphia. This game marks the 26th game in a row with a turnover, the longest streak in the NFL. The only would-be sack came late in the 3rd from a bone-crushing hit on Sanchez by Kevin Barnes. Barnes is called for a helmet to helmet thus cancelling out the sack. The third quarter seemed to have been the “penalty” quarter. The Redskins ended the game with 6 penalties for 50 yards opposed to the Jets’ 6 penalties for 40.

The fourth quarter began with the Redskins and Jets tied 13-13. As the defense began to tire, Sanchez and the Jets offense begins to take advantage. The Redskins will score only three points in the fourth, coming from a 46 yard Graham Gano field goal with 7:49 remaining. 16-13. At 4:49 in the fourth, Josh Wilson gets burned by Santonio Holmes for a 30-yard touchdown pass from Sanchez. 20-16. The defense starts to crumble. After Tomlinson went down in the first, Shonn Greene is given the chance to shine for the Jets. And pick apart the Redskins defensive front. Greene rushed 22 times for 88 yards and 3 touchdowns. Two of which coming in the last 4 minutes of the game.

It seemed as if the sack on Grossman in the fourth was the turning point for the Redskins, and the rallying point for the Jets. Late in the fourth, Jamal Brown gets beat by a swim move at the hands of Aaron Maybin. Maybin is able to get to Rex and force a fumble, another turnover placing the Jets in the redzone. This time, they convert with a touchdown. Morale seems to be low as the Redskins fall 34-19 to the Jets, making them 4-8 on the season. A tough loss for the Redskins.
