1st Half Feelings

Game Recaps

At a cool, 54 degrees in Landover, the Redskins (4-7) host the Jets (6-5). Redskins win the toss and elect to receive.

The Redskins’ opening drive was nothing short of miraculous. Led by Roy Helu, the 8 play 82 yard drive ended with a Redskins touchdown. Only the second first quarter touchdown of the season. Helu looked nothing short of unstoppable in the first half, posting 11 carries for 63 yards and a touchdown. Helu shows great promise for being an all-downs back. Some of Helu’s performance, however, could be contributed to poor tackling by the Jets’ defense.

The Jets start out the game in the wildcat, and even using the option at one point in time. During the Jets’ first drive, I couldn’t help but notice the lack of penetration from the Redskins’ defensive front. This continued throughout the first half as well, and no sacks have been recorded thus far. Ladanian Tomlinson goes down early and will not return for the remainder of the half. Nothing too spectacular out of Brandon Banks so far, aside from a great lateral on a kickoff late in the 1st to Anthony Armstrong. Banks has the speed but seems to be hesitant to let loose this afternoon. Santana seems to be playing at 100% today, with one of his 3 receptions going for 21 yards. The big story, and not so surprising, is Fred Davis. Davis is on track to have a breakout game with 4 receptions for 82 yards. Most of his yards coming after the catch.

In the second quarter, the game started to slow down. When given opportunities, Helu was still able to find gaps with an explosive 22 yard run. Neither the Jets or Redskins will see the endzone in the second quarter. On defense, the Redskins’ secondary seems to be giving quite a large cushion to Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress, allowing 10-15 yard passes. Kyle Shanahan seems to be confused. On multiple Redskin drives, all three plays before a punt were passes. Helu has shown the ability to move the chains, use him. Rex made some good passes in the first quarter but looked like he had lost his rythm in the second, constantly overthrowing receivers. One of his wild-high passes would have been a touchdown. After a Jets muffed punt late in the second places the Redskins in the RedZone, they are unable to score 7. Redskins settle for 3 and the Jets kneel out the half. I’d like to see a lot more pressure on Sanchez in the second half. Force him to get frustrated and make bad decisions. 13-10 Redskins
